HOTO MiniVac

February 2026 - April 2026 / 8 Weeks

Brief

Using reverse engineering, design a small electric or battery-operated household device for a given company.

Approach

Through market research and trend analysis, I found an opportunity to expand HOTO’s product system.

Outcome

The HOTO MiniVac was created — a tool that cleans crevices in electronics so creators can keep using their cool tools.

Analyzing Market Trends

Consumers are increasingly moving towards DIY activities and increasing number of personal electronics.

The Problem

Individuals with portable, electronic devices need a way to clean small crevices because air suction alone does not properly remove wedged dust/particles. The presence of dust and dirt in electronics can damage battery and performance.

Opportunity:

The home power tool market lacks personal tools used for DIY activities. HOTO has a strong foundation in smart displays, calibrated torque, and modular mechanisms. With this technology, they can provide creators with domestic care tools that increase control and efficiency.

Model Evolution

In the iteration process, my main focus was reducing the diameter of the vacuum to better fit the scale of its intended function. To accomplish this, I had to develop an impeller smaller than those in existing vacuums.

Prototyping

To create the final prototype, I took parts from existing vacuums and 3D-printed housing, a 1” diameter impeller, and the modular bits. I primed, sanded, and painted each piece. Then, I resin printed the clear cap, making sure the tolerances allowed the bits to twist and lock.

The Solution

I will design a handheld vacuum with a physical insert to dislodge and capture dust. Because of its ability to clean small crevices in electronics such as USB-C ports, this product provides care to HOTO’s entire product system as well as other brands’ devices.
